● Grounds for selection

Following the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster that occurred in March 2011, Dr. Chhem promptly led efforts, as the Director of the Division of Human Health of the IAEA, to conduct dose assessments as well as health risk assessments of local residents. He also played a leading role in disseminating accurate information about the disaster to member states.

In 2013, Dr. Chhem began introducing the concept of Science, Technology, and Society (STS) into radiation risk science education, contributing to personnel development at Nagasaki University, Hiroshima University, and Fukushima Medical University.

Since 2015, Dr. Chhem has published many articles and books in collaboration with experts at Nagasaki University, Hiroshima University, and Fukushima Medical University, dedicating his efforts to the dissemination of accurate information regarding radiation exposure and its health effects.

Dr. Chhem has thus made significant contributions to the advancement of Hibakushas’ medical care, and he has been selected for the 15th Takashi Nagai Memorial Nagasaki Peace Award” in recognition of his achievements.
