Yasuhito Sasaki has, in addition to developing diagnostic methods in the field of nuclear medicine, led the way for the clinical application of heavy ion radiotherapy through carbon ion beams and otherwise made significant contributions to the application of radiation for diagnosis and treatment. He has also made great contributions in the field of nuclear disaster medicine, such as overseeing the treatment of severe radiation exposure patients as the director of the National Institute of Radiological Sciences during the Tokaimura nuclear disaster of 1999.

He also established new atomic bombing victim certification standards and articulated his stance that certification helps serve as relief for victims during his tenure as Chairman of the Atomic Bomb Survivor Medical Care Subcommittee.

Internationally, he has contributed to the development of standards for radiation protection based on scientific knowledge of the effects of radiation exposure through his work representing Japan as a main member of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) as well as a member of Committee 3 and the chairman of the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR).
